Every maternal death is a tragedy that traumatizes many, including the healthcare workers involved in caring for the mother and baby. When mothers die, it has an enormous impact on partners, children, and communities, and the rate of maternal death is a marker of the overall health of a society.
It is unacceptable that Black and indigenous women are more likely to die and suffer severe maternal morbidity when giving birth in the United States than women from other races and ethnicities.
This approximately 30 minute web-based program, developed by the Institute for Perinatal Quality Improvement (PQI), provides interactive education designed for healthcare workers who care for people who are or may become pregnant.
At the completion of the training, the learner will:
- describe trends in the rate of maternal mortality and severe morbidity
- identify the leading causes of pregnancy-related mortality in the prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum phases
- describe racial disparities in maternal mortality
